TOMs stands for Tomorrow, as in The Shoes of Tomorrow. I have had the privilege of meeting @BlakeMycoskie, Chief Shoe Giver and Founder of TOMs. This brief encounter came about as I organized a huge local event where thousands of TOMs shoes were sold.
The startling fact is that a pair of shoes can save the life of a child in a third-world country. Thousands of children die every year due to barefoot injuries that get infected, infested with worms, and become a nesting place for the myriad of diseases that come from walking with bare feet through open sewers and decaying garbage. These shoes are indeed lifesavers.
For every pair of TOMs shoes that are purchased, a pair is given to a child in need. One for One. In fact, they’re not just shipped and dropped off in bulk by a delivery company. They are hand delivered by care teams who seek out a specific child and spend time with them, washing their feet and talking to them about why they are getting this pair of shoes – because someone cared enough to buy One for One. What started out as a dream in Blake’s mind, is now turning into an international phenomenon. He is the mastermind behind the concept that businesses are now embracing – to get more, you have to give more. Please visit their blog for more of the story.
TOMs are not just available online, but are now showing up in so many places (like Nordstrom and stand-alone stores popping up all over the place)! I love the shoes and love the cause. You just can’t go wrong with a pair of TOMs!
